Driver Dispatch Automation - How Truckload Optimization has Evolved
The use of optimization for load matching in truckload trucking dates to the late 1970s when the emphasis was on covering loads while minimizing empties by optimizing across all drivers rather than allowing driver managers to limit themselves to just their own region.
Early optimization models for load matching were able to focus on maximizing revenues and minimizing empty miles. Several addressed the added complexity of picking up loads on time and getting drivers home. These models could handle this by including bonuses for getting drivers home and penalties for picking up or delivering loads early or late.
